Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) is one of the ambitious schemes of Indian government to eradicate poverty and put a check on rural-urban migration. Villagers tend to migrate to urban areas because of poor economic opportunities and in the lure of better livelihood.
The scheme guarantees every BPL card holder a guaranteed employment of 100 days and the payment with in a designated period of time. Soochna Seva team in the West Champaran district found that the situation was not rosy. They discovered that around three crore rupees of more than 1000 people are yet to be distributed; the payment concerned the work that was executed two years ago. Taking the cognizance of the issue, the team intimated the concerned officials in the development department to expedite the payment process.
The team also arranged a meeting of the affected people and the concerned government officials. Laborers waiting for the release of their money put forward their concerns in response to which the officials assured that the money will be deposited in their respective bank accounts. Officials asked them to fill a complaint form and forward it to the Block Development Officer (BDO).
Around 60 people from five different panchayats filled the complaint forms. It is one of its own kind initiatives by Soochna Seva team.
