Fifty-six-year-old Achalram, a resident of Kalyanpur in Barmer district of Rajasthan, has been working in a stone quarry for the last 15 years while his wife earns 100 days of labour under MGNREGA every year. Hailing from a poor family of a backward caste, Achalram has lived a hard life and continues to live a hard life. While Achalram’s young son, Lalit, is still studying and is yet to contribute to the household income, the older son, 18-year-old Mularam, is an alcoholic. Achalram has two daughters as well, and finances for their weddings are a major concern for him, so is the cost of treatment for silicosis. Achalram was detected with silicosis a few years ago, but was unable to receive proper treatment for the same due to lack of financial resources.
However, recently a Soochna Sevak called Shankarlal Solanki met Achalram in Kalyanpur. Solanki informed Achalram about various government schemes that he can benefit from in the light of his health. Enrollment under one such health scheme helped him receive Rs. 1 lakh in his bank account for treatment, within three months of submitting the application. Achalram is hopeful that once his treatment is complete, he will be able to increase his productivity and get better earnings into the house to wed his daughters well.
