Ravi Kumar was busy herding the cattle in the rough grassland when one of the Soochna Seva team members spotted him. They were on the way to Matiyariya village in Gaunaha block of West Champaran, for one-to one meeting with the villagers. They noticed that Ravi was unable to walk properly as his feet were bent outwards and also he stooped while walking. The team stopped their vehicle and moved forward to interact with Ravi.
They came to know that Ravi was born with distorted legs and it took half-an-hour for him to cover a kilometers distance. As he grew up, he learned to adjust his life accordingly with lots of struggle he carried out his daily activities. His parents and elder brothers used to work in fields and the entire family was dependent on farming. He often felt left-out from the tribe as he was unable to help his family physically. But, Ravi’s parents understood the complication that he was going through. Therefore, they admitted Ravi to a nearby school in Matiyariya village in order to provide education so that he can earn in future years.
Disabled people are prone to experience obstacles in their day-to-day lives. The situation is even more difficult in rural areas compared to the urban places. These people are devoid of proper health facilities, good education and job opportunities which eventually trap them into the web of poverty and ignorance. So, to provide financial security to the disabled people, the Government of India has initiated Viklang Pension Scheme for the BPL families. Unfortunately, this information too does not reach maximum number of people due to poor outreach and information sharing. Soochna Seva project aims to bridge this gap and empower people with information. The Soochna Seva team visits remote locations and inform people about the schemes.
Likewise, the team went to Matiyariya village and met Ravi’s father, Ramkishan Mahto. He had tried a lot to apply for the Viklang Pension Scheme but he could not do so due to lack of documents. Soochna Seva team helped him to obtain the Certificate of Disability and Identification Proof of Ravi Kumar and also opened a bank account under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojna. Then the team assisted Ravi to fill the form for Viklang Pension Scheme and submitted the documents at Right to Public Service (RTPS) dept., West Champaran. Within 45 days Ravi Kumar received 500 rupees in his bank account as his first pension. The family thanked the Soochna Seva team for helping and securing the future of Ravi Kumar.
