A new service in the basket, Umri Panchyat, Madhya Pradesh
In mid-2015, the post office of Itki block directed pensioners to open personal accounts in nationalized banks for further transactions. This turned out to be nerve-aching news for Nanki Kerketta, a 64-year-old widow from Kunti village in Itki block. She began visiting the bank every alternate day in order to open an account but every time she was unsuccessful. The slow and sluggish work of the bank officials delayed the account opening process which resulted into a huge crowd outside the bank. Nani Kerketta did not even get the opportunity to fill the bank account form.
Her son and daughter-in-law worked hard in the fields of other farmers and whatever they earned was too less to feed the 8 member family. Their other source of survival was the pension that Nani received under Old Age Pension.
The continuous wait outside the bank and travel from her village to the Itki block affected Nani’s health. As, her village was in remote location and access to the block was too troublesome, she felt helpless and ultimately gave up the thought of opening the account. For two months the family suffered heavy financial crisis. There was no way out for the family to seek help or guidance. Their pain was eased when Nani Devi finally opened an account in the camp organised by Soochna Seva team.
Just like regular camps, the team conducted a camp for opening an account for Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and during this camp Nani Kerketta opened her account. After three days, she received her stopped pension and gave heartily thanks to the Soochna Seva team.
